The Surselva is a place mad for hiking, biking, golfing, horse riding, swimming... There are almost no limits to the possibilities of sporting activities. In untouched nature, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and mass tourism, every sportsman will find a way to indulge his passion.
A visit to the Rhine gorge is an absolute must for any guest in the Surselva. The Grand Canyon of Switzerland, as the steep valley is also called, can be explored in many different ways.
Along the Rhine, which flows through the gorge for over 14 kilometres, well-signposted hiking trails lead over rock formations framed by pines, through shady forests and fireplaces. Small islands and sandbanks invite to take a break linger and grill or just enjoy the unique view on the 400-metre-high limestone walls.
Those who prefer to admire the magnificent landscape from above can test their head for heights on «Il Spir», a viewing platform near Flims-Conn – situated not far from the Waldhaus Hotel – or on the Islabord near Versam. However, this altitude will not satisfy paraglide pilots and brave adventurers. In order to actually see the breathtaking surroundings from a bird's eye view, it is highly recommended to start off from Crap Sogn Gion or Naraus and experience the gorge and scenery flying.
The legendary beauty of the Rhine gorge can also be seen directly from the water: How about a lively and wild river rafting experience on the Vorderrhein? A raft takes you over raging rapids and quieter river sections down the Rhine to Reichenau and back to Versam by the almost cultish train Rhaetian Railway.
Relax and pedal across country, enjoy the beauty of nature and recharge batteries - literally. The e-bike season in the region runs from mid-May to mid-October. Silently darting up the mountain to Bargis, down to the edge of the Rhine gorge or to the crystal-clear Crestasee.
After an extensive hike or an impressive e-bike tour, a jump into the cool waters of Lake Cresta is a real treat. In contrast to the well-attended Cauma Lake, the small, clear natural lake is a real insider tip – and by the way; it can only be reached on foot. A wonderful place to exercise balance on the standup paddle and savor the unique mountain scenery.
The golf course in Sagogn got its name «Buna Vista» thanks to the extensive alpine panorama. The 18-hole course (par 72) impresses with the quality of a champion course and a driving range with 40 teeing grounds that can be played on both sides.
Away from greens and fairways there are various riding stables offering adventures on horseback for young and old. From trekking tours, dressage and jumping lessons to leisurely rides - horse lovers will find their sporting pleasure in the Surselva too.
